We grow almost every vegetable that can cut it in upstate NY (corn being the exception, because growing organic corn surrounded by neighbors growing cow corn is not fun, since every worm in a twenty-mile radius wants our delicious ears for a snack)!

In our CSA, we pre-pack the shares, which means you are getting a box with a farmer-selected mix of veggies (and we always try to choose what we think you like best!).

We strive for a good mix of crops, which to us includes a balance in each box of:

  • Something you can enjoy in a salad (lettuce, spinach, arugula or the like)

  • Cooking greens (chard, kale, spinach, or one of the unique greens)

  • Heartier root crops (beets, carrots, potatoes, etc)

  • Something you can snack on (peas, peppers, cherry tomatoes, carrots)

  • Heartier “fruiting” veggie staples (zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, beans, winter squash)

  • Herbs or Allium flavoring veggies (cilantro, parsley, onions, scallions, etc)

  • And many weeks, something fun or unique – we don’t want to overwhelm with oddball veggies, but love sending some fun things into the world (kohlrabi, celtuce, husk cherries, and more)

One of the fun parts of being in a CSA is getting a sense of the seasonality of vegetables, and tasting how those veggies are really in their prime. Here’s an idea of what that looks like over the flow of summer:

Early Summer CSA Share Examples (June and July):

June kicks off with fresh greens, baby root veggies, salad fixings, herbs, and more, before ending with snap pea and summer squash season in early July!  Spring veggies are the most tender of the year, and after long CNY winters they are also much appreciated!  We give lots of recipe advice during this season, because spring is also a season for some of the less familiar veggies of the year –so it’s a perfect time to discover your next favorite crop!

Some things in early season Hartwood Farm CSA shares are:  arugula, baby beets, broccoli, chard, cilantro, dill, kale, kohlrabi, lettuce, peas, radishes, salad turnips, scallions, spinach, and lots of lovely fresh herbs!

Summer CSA Share Examples (July to early September):

By mid to late July, the season of bounty is on us and the shares are loaded down with a full mix of salad vegetables, cooking greens, root crops, and fruiting vegetables!  Fresh, local summer veggies are what we wait all year to enjoy because they are the best!

Some things in summer season Hartwood Farm CSA shares are:  basil, beans, beets, carrots, chard, cucumbers, eggplant, kale, lettuce, melons, onions, peppers, summer squash, tomatoes, zucchini, and more.

Fall CSA Share Examples (mid-September into October):

The bounty continues even as summer winds down and the nights get colder! Fall is a time of hearty vegetables, and also the reemergence of some of the tender spring favorites, as some crops really prefer to grow when it’s cool.

Some things in fall season Hartwood Farm CSA shares are:  arugula, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, chard, kale, leeks, lettuce, onions, potatoes, tatsoi, winter squash, and a lot more.
