vegetables are the heart of Hartwood Farm! we love to grow them, and do a great job of producing delicious and nutritious crops...
Hartwood Farm grows a complete range of vegetables. Our crops include (among other things): beans, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celeriac, chard, collards, cucumbers, edamame, edible flowers, eggplant, fennel, lots of different herbs, kale, leeks, lettuce, melons, onions, peas, peppers, popcorn, radishes, rutabaga, scallions, spinach, summer squash, turnips, winter squash, zucchini, and a ton of different leafy greens!
We focus on providing a mix of heirloom and hybrid crops throughout the season, and buy our seed from local and regional seed companies. Let us know if you have special requests, and we might be able to grow it!
We grow our vegetables using only methods and products that are approved for organic production. Since we mainly sell directly to our customers, we are not currently certified organic, but may take this step at some point if our members want us to (let us know your thoughts on this, as we are considering going for it in 2018)! For fertilization, we use a mix of cultural practices like rotating crops and growing cover crops (these are crops grown just for protecting and adding to the soil, not for sale).
We also add animal manures, compost, mineral amendments like lime and rock powders, and some organically approved fertilizer (like fish emulsion and kelp meal). To control pests, we use fabric row covers, crop rotation, and if needed, organically approved sprays (one of our favorites is a kaolin clay that keeps the bugs from eating the crops!).
We welcome any and all questions from customers about our growing practices and what we use on the veggies, and we welcome visitors by appointment to check out the fields!
